No, they are very comfortable. I have some back problems, Ape hangers force me to sit straighter. No, your arms don’t get tired. Your not holding, your arms up, just resting them higher. Your shoulders will get sore at first, but that goes away. Apes can be adjusted for how you like to ride. Siting up or lay edng back. As far as the aesthetics, that depends on if your o’l lady thinks they are cool looking. My wife loves them.

The reason for ape hangers is aesthetics. When adjusted correctly, they visually extend the line created by the front fork, giving the impression the forks are longer than they really are.
Concerning some of the less than complimentary comments made, I agree that ape hangers are not very functional. But then again, neither is the lower back pain inducing, crouched over, weight on the arms position of the average sport bike. That position is meant for guys who really know how to ride and do so at high speeds on the race track. It’s certainly not very practical for the kids that show off around town and the fastest they ever go is when running 70 mph between stoplights or on backstreets.
There’s a guy around here that has some huge ape hangers that runs at 70 mph on the four-lane. That riding style certainly doesn’t appeal to me as I meet him on my fully faired, radio and backrest equipped bike but I seriously doubt my bike appeals to him either.
I have a question for some of you, is it really necessary to criticize someone for doing what they like or for having a different opinion than you? They have just as much right to ride a chopper with tassels hanging from the ape hangers as you do to ride crouched over on a sport bike. Live and let live.

It’s pretty much purely for looks. Having raised handlebars can be comfortable to an extend if you have forward controlls and like a reclined riding position, however when they are raised like two feet its uncomfortable, unsafe, and illegal, I think they are only supposed to go no higher than your soldiers.

These are more for style than comfort. Personally, I prefer the stock handlebars on a Harley, but to each his own.
I don’t make the payments on your bike so I don’t really care whay you ride, as long as you ride. You don’t make the payments on my bike so you shouldn’t care about what I ride.

It is purely a personal statement. You will notice as many ape hanger bars as well as drag bars. I have ridden both, and find that I tire quicker riding the high bars, I prefer to have the low drag bars, that allows my upper body to lean into the wind, which tires me less. Your question is valid so do not everyone give you crap.

Don’t listen to ninebadteeth. His bias blinds him to everything else.
They’re refered to as “Ape-Hangers” (or, Arm-Pit Ventilators).
It’s a matter of personal preference. I feel (personally) after a while, my arms get tired (blood flowing downhill, perhaps?).

Apes go way back before the movie easy rider. They started out in the late 50’s and early 60’s. When guys woud strip and bob their bikes they had lots of stuff left like crash bars. the first apes were made by re-bending a set of crash bars. They went out of style in the late 60’s and you never saw them much until the 90’s.

had a few bikes with ape hangers on.. not uncomfortable for city riding & your arms don’t get tired.. but at highway speeds the air on your chest pushes you back.. so you spend a lot of energy holding your self in place..this tires the arms & abs…Clip ons/ racing bars are great at highway speeds but kill the wrists at city speeds…

it looks uncomfortable because it is. imagine hanging on monkey bars for the whole time you’re riding. the bars being so high also makes it difficult to turn because you don’t have any leverage.

The handle bars you are asking about are called “Ape Hangers” (They look like a ape hanging from a tree). I have rode a bike with these bars and they are not very comfortable. I don`t know why they made them, maybe a status symbol.
I also have heard them called “Arm pit driers” lol

It’s a wannabee thing copied after the Captain America bike in the old movie, “Easyrider”. Once they started to appear, people kept trying to get taller and taller ones. They are uncomfortable for all but slow riding and are illegal in most states if they extend more than 15 inches above the seat.

Just a stupid look that is in style with dirtbags. Not only would it be very uncomfortable but on a curvy road these bikes would have to slow way down to ride safely.
